"And now...the Dance of Solitude!" |
"I told you, you pious stooge! I am no frog, I am Captain Ginyu of the illustrious GIN-" |
Captain Ginyu (ギニュー, Ginyū) is a horned, purple-skinned humanoid alien who is the leader of the elite Ginyu Force. He is known as the strongest person in Freeza's army, with a power level second only to Freeza himself.
Personality[]
Ginyu is a dedicated member of Freeza's forces, and seems to be a great leader to the Ginyu Force. He cares about his soldiers and was deeply upset when all of them died, even asking for a moment to grieve.
A strong showman, Ginyu has a flare for dramatic posing in everything he does, a practice he claims is done to boost the morale of his troops. Despite this oddity, Ginyu is a very by-the-books soldier, strictly adhering to military guidelines and practices while expecting the same of his men.
While the original series Ginyu was fairly gruff, he is voiced by Antfish as something of an officer-and-a-gentleman, with a noticeable upperclass English accent and a dignified speech pattern. This carries over to when he is bodyswapped with Goku.
Biography[]
Prior to the start of the series, Ginyu was involved in the infamous yet unexplained jockstrap incident, during which he was noted as the one to "dig the holes." The jackstrap incident was evidently so unspeakable that it caused even King Yemma to shudder in disgust.
Captain Ginyu and his comrades are commissioned by Freeza to travel to Planet Namek in order to track down Vegeta along with delivering the new updated scouters. Upon reaching the planet, Freeza reports that Vegeta has stolen of his five DragonBalls and orders the Ginyu Force to recover them along with dealing of Vegeta and his two companions (Gohan and Krillin). After performing a quick warm-up routine, the Ginyu Force takes off to track down Vegeta.
The Ginyu Force later confronts Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin and steals all five DragonBalls Vegeta has previously acquired. To prevent the Ginyu Force from stealing the last two DragonBalls, Vegeta tries to throw one DragonBall he was currently holding as hard as he could into the distance, but Burter manages to catch it due to his impressive speed. In an act of desperation, Vegeta demands Krillin to break the last DragonBall he was holding (having little-to-no success doing so), but Guldo manages to stop time and steals it. Leaving his comrades to deal with Vegeta and the others, Ginyu flies off to delivers the DragonBalls to Freeza.
After delivering all seven DragonBalls to Freeza, the tyrant attempts to summon the eternal dragon and make his wish for immortality, but nothing happens. Ginyu proposes there must be a password needed to summon the dragon, enraging Freeza due to his assumption he had already killed the entire Namekian race, leaving nobody left to learn said password from. Ginyu then suggests Freeza to use his scouter to search for any surviving Namekians, which he uses to find three Namekians in an area left untouched by his forces. Freeza then heads off to the area while Ginyu stays behind to guard the seven DragonBalls, whilst performing the "Dance of Solitude".
While waiting for Freeza's return, Jeice arrives to report to Ginyu that a powerful warrior has arrived and killed the rest of the team. Upset at the loss of his men, Ginyu declares they must not allow this to go unpunished and decides to take matters into his own hands by accompanying Jeice to confront the new fighter.
Upon arriving at the scene, Jeice confirms that Goku is the person responsible for taking out their comrades, causing Ginyu to start mocking Goku due to the shape of his hair and his clothes. Jeice then warns not to underestimate the Saiyan because he was strong enough to take down Recoome and Burter without breaking a sweat, and immediately gets punched in the face by Goku, leading a displeased Ginyu to remind the soldier about his advice regarding dodging. After engaging Vegeta in banter, Ginyu lets slip that Freeza's ship, and in turn the DragonBalls, are currently guarded only by low-level soldiers, leading the Saiyan Prince to escape and claim the balls for himself while abandoning Goku to fight Ginyu alone.
As Ginyu battles Goku, it looks as if they are both neck-to-neck in strength, but Goku reveals that he's not even using half of his power. Ginyu initially dismisses Goku's claim as a bluff before the Saiyan powers up, revaling his power level is 180,000 at full power. When Jeice points out that Ginyu's max power level is only 120,000, a horrified Ginyu immediately flips out and dives into the water screaming, only to emerge shortly afterwards after regaining his calm. Outclassed and knowing the odds are against him, Ginyu tosses his scouter at Jeice and punches himself hard in the chest before swapping bodies with Goku using his body change technique. In his new body, Ginyu flies off with Jeice to return to Freeza's ship while leaving Goku, now in Ginyu's badly damaged body, to bleed to death.
Upon arriving at Freeza's ship, they discover that someone has dug up the DragonBalls, leading Ginyu to declare that person would be in for the beating of their life. Krillin then appears and mistakes Ginyu as Goku before Gohan reveals the truth. Ginyu then proceeds to attack Gohan and Krillin before Goku (still in Ginyu's badly-damaged body) arrives. Upon seeing his father no longer in his own body, Gohan proceeds to go all-out and gives Ginyu a massive beatdown while Vegeta arrives and fights Jeice. Despite having witnessed Goku's power firsthand, Ginyu realizes he is unable to draw out the full power of his new body as its previous owner had. leaving him at a severe disadvantage. After Vegeta kills Jeice, he goes on to attack Ginyu, being delighted about killing both Ginyu and Kakarrot at the same time. This confuses Ginyu, as he never heard of "Kakarrot" before and only knew his body's original owner as "Goku". Confused and overpowered, Ginyu is quickly beaten to a bloody pulp. As Vegeta prepares to finish off the bodysnatcher by charging at him, Ginyu attempts to use his body changing technique again to switch bodies with Vegeta. Just before the blast can connect, Goku manages to jump in the way, believing he was saving "Goku", causing both sides to return to their original bodies. Vegeta then proceeds give the already severely-injured Ginyu a severe beating before tossing him into the air. Seeing another opportunity to swap bodies with Vegeta, Ginyu attempts to use his body change technique once more. However, the injured Goku notices a frog in his hand and throws it away in disgust, leading Ginyu to accidentally swap bodies with it as it flies in the way of his attack. Vegeta then proceeds to crush the helpless Frog-Ginyu under his boot, despite Goku trying to get him spare him. Meanwhile, the frog now inhabiting Ginyu's body hops away nonethewiser.
HFIL[]
It's revealed that Captain Ginyu was sent to Hell all the same as Freeza, Zarbon, Dodoria, the Ginyu Force, King Cold and Cell. However, Ginyu's body is still inhabited by the soul of the frog he switched bodies with. Unaware of what happened on Namek, this lead to his men believing that Ginyu had mentally regressed due to severe trauma, with only Guldo suggesting the body swap with a frog (which the others dismiss as ridiculous.) As such, they treat the Frog Ginyu akin to a pet or special-needs person. Frog Ginyu begins immediately attacking Cell, seemingly trying to eat him at every opportunity, stalking the bio-android wherever he goes from the Ginyu Force's backyard, to the trash bins, to even assaulting Cell in his own bedroom. Despite being unable to respond, Guldo has grown openly fond of Frog Ginyu, freely opening up to him about his own personal woes as part of the group.
When Cell discovers the Ginyu Force being the ones behind the many accidents and mishaps plaguing him after he'd forced then to keep Frog Ginyu on a leash, he abducts Frog Ginyu to force an apology from the group. Goz and Mez finally intervene when the two parties come to blows, revealing the truth about Ginyu's condition of having swapped bodies with a frog and the reason behind him constantly attacking Cell due to being a bug-man. They reveal it was due to a clerical error in management which no-one wanted to admit to, but did not say anything due to how having their supposed Captain with them and their overall progress was seen as a positive. This revelation leads to the Ginyu Force rejoicing that their Captain was alive somewhere (unaware of his actual death), to which they reason Frog Ginyu was not their Ginyu and insinuate not needing him back. This leads to Guldo finally standing up to his teammates and admitting that even if Frog Ginyu was not their Ginyu, he'd come to accept Frog Ginyu as his friend the same way as he regarded the rest of them. This display touched the rest of the Ginyu Force and they came to openly accept Frog Ginyu as their friend/pet/mascot.
Cell would then graciously reveal where he had hidden Frog Ginyu, namely that Super Kami Guru had swallowed him and proceeds to regurgitate him back out, rendering Frog Ginyu unharmed, albeit clearly traumatized by the experience. The Ginyu Force promise to treat him better, Recoome offering to dig him a pond in the backyard and Guldo suggests filling it with Shasta.
Back at the checking station the actual Captain Ginyu is revealed to be pleading his case to King Yemma. Unfortunately, as he is still trapped in a frog's body, King Yemma is unable to understand him, with no translator on-hand due to budget cuts. King Yemma dismisses Ginyu and orders him to be put through the soul scrubber and goes to take his lunch break. Ginyu is then promptly tossed into the soul scrubber for processing.
Abilities and energy powers[]
- Body Change: Ginyu posses the ability to switch bodies with someone else. He tends to wound himself before doing the technique so his foes will be weakened in his body. First used against Goku.

Trivia[]
- Ginyu's favorite food is waldorf salad (which is how Krillin and Gohan realize Ginyu had committed Grand Theft Goku).
- Ginyu is contracted under King Cold to perform the Dance of Joy post after every successful mission followed up with the Daddy’s Little Princess Dance (which is ordered by Freeza's brother).
- Unlike in the original anime, Ginyu does not retain his own voice after switching bodies. After switching bodies with Goku, he speaks in Goku's voice with MasakoX adopting Ginyu's mannerisms. Likewise, Goku retains Ginyu's voice after the switch, with Antfish adopting Goku's mannerisms.
- When in posession of Goku's body, Ginyu speaks with a very pronounced lisp.
- In the second episode of Dragon Ball Z Kai Abridged, Ginyu and the rest of the Ginyu Force are immediately crushed by Goku’s spaceship, which not only kills them, but also puts Goku out of commission.
- Captain Ginyu was the last member of the Ginyu Force to be seen in Hell, first debuting in HFIL Episode 4 "Oh Captain! My Captain". However it is only his BODY that had gone to hell (with still the Frog's brain/spirit inside something Guldo seemed to realize the others chalking it up Ginyu's differing attitude due to his death) with the mind still being used by the frog. In this state he is treated more as a pet and typically doesn't get close "friendly" with most of the others except for Cell once he first appears in the Ginyu's backyard in HFIL. Gaz and Mez would later reveal the truth of Ginyu's situation to the rest of the Ginyu Force, with them resolving to accept their new Frog Ginyu. Meanwhile, the real Ginyu would find himself in judgement by King Yemma in the frog body, unable to plead his case due to his inability to speak.
- Ginyu's death was a change from the original story, where Vegeta opted to spare Frog-Ginyu, seeing his life as a frog to be a greater humiliation than even death (and, alternatively depending on the dub, not wanting to get his new boots stained). Frog-Ginyu is never seen again in the manga, implying that he could have died during the destruction of Namek, but in the anime, he is transported to Earth and is seen around Gohan a few times. He was restored with the Earth and its people following Kid Buu's rampage, but as the wish to revive the people killed since the morning of the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament excluded evil people, it's unclear whether Frog-Ginyu was treated as wildlife, or if he had softened in his years on Earth. He did not appear in Resurrection: 'F', but did appear in the movie's adaptation into the Dragon Ball Super anime, where, given the chance to rejoin Freeza's forces, he switches bodies with Freeza's training partner, Tagoma. It's in Tagoma's body that Ginyu is finally killed, appropriately, by Vegeta, leaving Tagoma stranded in the Namekian frog body.
- The frog in Ginyu's body is also shown having been teleported to Earth in the anime, though he is never seen again after that, so it is unknown if he succumbed to the chest wound Ginyu inflicted upon himself before switching bodies with Goku. It's also unclear when the DBZA version died, as he is not seen after Episode 23 until HFIL.
- Takahata101 revealed during his creator commentary of episode 23 that he was against killing Frog-Ginyu because he wanted to adapt the filler sequence where Frog-Ginyu tricks Bulma into switching bodies, as it was the only filler from the saga that he liked, and he wanted to bring some attention back to Bulma, who otherwise had nothing to do with the story until Gohan rescued her and brought her back to Goku's ship. Unfortunately for Taka, he was overruled; in their own creator commentary of the episode, KaiserNeko and Lanipator were adamant about cutting filler - Lani especially emphasized that he did not want to do the Bulma-frog scenes, and Kaiser regretted not being able to add a blood splatter effect at the time (reshowing the squash scene with a new splatter effect).
