12-year-old Videl
Videl (ビーデル, Bīderu) is the daughter of Mr. Satan and Miguel. She is first referenced by Mr. Satan himself in Opening Serumonies*, with Cell calling her a "poor orphan" which her father realizes that Cell was insulting his child. She makes her brief physical debut in episode 59.
She is Gohan's wife and the mother of Pan.
Personality[]
Videl is a tough, tomboyish character, raised with fame all around her. She was a meek and soft child as she meets Gohan as they were children in Cell Games during the Cell Saga. She's feisty and stubborn, compared to Bulma's personality, who is happy and easy-going. After blackmailing Gohan to enter the tournament and teach her the levitation technique (using ki energy to fly), she gradually starts to fall in love with him, for his kind and honest heart. She later becomes the wife of Gohan and mother of Pan.
Biography[]
Background[]
Videl was born in Age 756 and grew up learning martial arts, hoping to be as great as her father, when in fact, unknown to herself, she was already better and stronger than him. On May 7 of Age 767, when she was 11, Videl won in the Juniors Division of the 24th World Martial Arts Tournament. Videl's mother passed away from the "Big C" (cancer, not Cell) during her childhood, leaving Mr. Satan to raise Videl alone. Her father is very protective of her, especially in respect to boys, only allowing her to have a boyfriend if he was stronger than him, which Videl thought was impossible (until Gohan came along) and she misses her mother greatly.
Buu Bits[]
If the events of Buu Bits are any indication, Videl eventually became a crime fighter, working with the police to bring peace to Satan City, thanks in part to her father’s influence. She also began attending Orange Star High School along with her friends Erasa and Sharpner. She also became acquainted with Gohan who had just transferred to their school. During her time as a crime fighter, a superhero named the Great Saiyaman also appeared in Satan City, upsetting Videl as he had taken away the spotlight from her as Satan City’s protector as well as disapproving of his vigilante status.
Videl would have several run-ins with the Great Saiyaman, attempting to apprehend him on each occasion. Videl would eventually discover that her superhero rival was in fact her classmate Gohan and in exchange for not revealing his secret, she coerced Gohan into teaching her how to fly. Videl and Gohan would grow closer in that time, confiding in each other about their personal lives such as Videl revealing losing her mother to the Big C (cancer), which Gohan mistakenly believes she meant Cell, admitting he lost his father to the bug man as well, but Videl quickly corrected him, as well as recalled that everyone who was killed by Cell was brought back to life mysteriously after Cell was killed, to which Gohan, discontent, revealed that not everyone was brought back.
Voice actress[]
- In episode 59, she was voiced by Sarah Anne Williams.
- In Buu Bits, she was voiced by Katy Johnson.
Trivia[]
- Videl's only appearance in Dragon Ball Z Abridged was as a 12-year-old in episode 59. She was portrayed using non-animated original footage, as Videl never appeared as a child in the original show. For a long time, this was her only appearance in a Team Four Star production until the Buu Bits in 2023.
- In Team Four Star's ongoing longplay of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, series creators Lanipator and KaiserNeko revealed their plan for Videl prior to Dragon Ball Z Abridged's cancellation, which were later retooled into the Buu Bits. In contrast to Gohan's flashy Tokusatsu-style heroism as The Great Saiyaman, Videl would have been portrayed as a more grounded and grittier "street-level" hero, similar to Marvel Comic's Punisher, with no patience for The Great Saiyaman's antics. It is unknown if Sarah Anne Williams would have continued voicing her.
- Her liking Gohan's hair is a reference to her later attraction to him.
- Mr. Satan mentions Videl likes Harry Potter. In support of this, a Harry Potter poster can be seen behind her TV to the right.
- In the commentary for Episode 59, KaiserNeko commented that she likely would have sold her collection at some point between the Cell and Buu Sagas after becoming disillusioned with JK Rowling and the series as a whole.
